Support at Düsseldorf Airport

At the transit area of Düsseldorf Airport, the Federal Border Control maintains accommodation facilities for newly arrived foreign refugees, who in accordance with the so-called airport procedure, can remain there for up to 19 days. Should the asylum process not be completed within this period – including court summary proceedings –, the asylum seeker is officially permitted to enter the Federal Republic of Germany. However, far more than 90 % of asylum seekers are subsequently sent back to their homeland.

This puts affected persons under a special kind of pressure, in particular as they are not allowed to leave the transit area. We therefore put the main emphasis of our support in developing interpersonal relations. Apart from translating and interpreting, our multi-lingual social workers also discuss the current life circumstances of the asylum seekers, quite often also in cooperation with the local process advisors. If required, our carers also keep the refugees company with leisure activities.

Apart from that, we provide the refugees with clothes and all necessary household articles, including food. We also take over the cleaning of laundry.
